Matt Whitman is a life-long resident of HRM and is passionate about the municipality. He honours the past by respecting heritage and veterans. He is responsive and action-oriented in managing present-day issues. He has a vision for the future which involves sustainable growth.
Matt grew up near the Dingle Tower in Jollimore, went to QEH, graduated from St. Mary’s University in 1992 with a geography degree and raised his children in Hammonds Plains.
Matt is very proud of his son and daughter who are both working and thriving in the HRM business community.
He is the youngest of four boys who was raised by a resilient, dedicated mother and entrepreneurial, community-minded fathers. Matt was a well-rounded student and from an early age, it was clear that his talent was connecting with others. He developed relationships with ease and always looked for ways to bridge connections between others.
Prior to his role as an elected official, Matt spent twenty years in business as a sales professional in the finance and IT industries.
Matt Whitman was first elected to Halifax Regional Council in 2012, representing District 13 – Hammonds Plains – St. Margarets, and re-elected in 2016. Councillor Whitman was elected by his colleagues to the one-year term of Deputy Mayor in 2015/16.
